Keep Safe while Browsing the Internet

With the internet mimicking aspects of the real world, there are good websites and fraudulent websites. Information on a website is not verified by anyone so please don’t believe everything you read just because it is in print. There are billions and billions of web pages on the internet and it is important to be aware of how to keep yourself safe while cruising the net for information. Here are a few things to know to keep you safe when cruising the internet.

  • Buying online using a credit card is fine but make sure you know who the company is before you do. A business website is linked to someone, so a company you are unfamiliar with is worth doing your research about. When in doubt don’t buy online.
  • Emails requesting information from legitimate companies and banks requesting passwords, account numbers or login information are all fraud. No company will ever ask you for this information over email.
  • Unfortunately to say but any email you receive that says you have won a million dollars or a trip for two to paradise, just click here to continue is also fraud.
  • Create a separate email address to use for all internet inquiry registration. Most people receive spam from registrations they have initiated over the internet. Unfortunately some people sell email addresses they receive online. If this does happen, you can just delete this email address and start over.
  • Don’t just say yes to everything – read pop-ups and understand what you are saying yes to before you do so. There are a lot of reasons why you need to install programs or download files but viruses also come in these forms. If you are unsure why you are being asked to download something, ‘Google It’ and learn what it is.

What is "Google It"? Well, as the internet has billions of web pages some of you may be asking how on earth do you find anything. Great question! Search Engines like Google are designed to organize the internet for you based on what you are searching for. They look at every web page and find the websites they think are most relevant and arrange them in a list for you to choose from. This is how you find information on the internet as you will not know the address of every website you are interested in. However, you will start to have a few ´favourites´ as time goes on

For this reason it is important to consider Search Engine Optimization as these considerations will make your website accessible to more people
