ART THERAPY TORONTO - MARKHAM
How does Art Therapy Work?
Feelings and emotions originate as pictures and images in our minds. Art, as a therapeutic intervention, allows these feelings to be represented without distortion. The client is encouraged to "free associate" with the artwork to establish what may need to be expressed. At no time is this process rushed or forced. The client works at his/her own need. Symbols and themes may emerge in the artwork over time. Please refer to the folowing websites for additional information: www.oata.ca and www.catainfo.ca
Physical Process of Art Therapy
Art material, including crayons, paint, paper, clay, collage materials, felt pens, pastels, is used by the client to "create" a picture of their inner reality, i.e. their feelings and emotions. The client is then free to make an association to these expressions. The client works at his/her own pace, in a safe and accepting environment. Creating artwork can increase self-esteem and give a sense of accomplishment.
